Year 1951
1951 Venice: Panathlon was founded.
The idea of Mario Viali is shared by a promoting committee formed by Guido Brandolini D'Adda, Domenico Chiesa, Aristide Coin, Aldo Colussi, Antenore Marini, Costantino Masotti. The constitutive act of the association takes the name of “Disnar Sport” (disnar is a venetian expression meaning having dinner eat ), says:
PREMISED THAT SPORT ALL OVER THE WORLD HAS DEVELOPPED SO MUCH TO BE CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ACTIVITIES OF EACH NATION
“IN ORDER TO CONNECT ALL KIND OF SPORTS AND TO PROMOTE THE SPORTS IDEA REFERRED TO MORAL AND SOCIAL IDEALS, TOGETHER WITH THE SPORTS FEDERATIONS UNDER THE PROTECTION OF C.O.N.I., WITH REFERENCE TO CHIVALRY, SERIOUSNESS AND DISCIPLINE,
AND THAT AT THE TABLE FRIENDSHIP AND SYMPATIES BRIGHTEN UP
PERSONS CAN DISCUSS FRANKLY AND CORDIALLY AND CAN OFTEN ELIMINATE DOUBTS, MISUNDERSTANDINGS AND INCOMPREHENSIONS
AND THAT SPORT MUST UNITE INDIVIDUALS AND PEOPLES IN ONE IDEAL APART FROM PARTICULAR INTERESTS, POLITIC CONVICTIONS SOCIAL CLASSES AND AGE,
IT PROPOSES: TO FOUND AN ASSOCIATION FORMED BY A RESTRICTED NUMBER OF MEMBERS, IN EACH TOWN AT THE MOMENT AT LEAST A CHIEF-TOWN OF A PROVINCE, NOW IN VENICE, IN FEW DAYS IN VENETO OR BETTER IN THE THREE VENICES, THEN (ASAP) IN ALL ITALY AND SUCCESSIVELY AFTER A SHORT PERIOD OF EXPERIMENT IN EUROPE AND IN THE WORLD.
To approve this constitutive act there are 24 pioneers who are the founders: Salvatore Brugliera (athletics), Tiziano Calore (tennis), Angelo Cecchinato (gym), Domenico Chiesa (football), Aristide Coin (cycling), Aldo Colussi (athletics), Pietro De Marzi (technician of sports installations), Guido De Poli, Egidio De Zottis , Carlo Donadoni , Ludovico Foscari, Paolo Foscari, Guglielmo Guglielmi, Alberto Heinz, Antenore Marini, Costantino Masotti, Luigi Pavanello, Orazio Pettinelli , Aldo Querci della Rovere (sport medicine), Gino Ravà (winter sports ), Antonio Scalabrin (swimming ), Alfonso Vandelli, Mario Viali, Mario Zanotti.
It takes three meetings (3 August, 7 September, 5 October) to approve the definitive name of the Association: PANATHLON, coined by the Count Ludovico Foscari (from greek pan=all and athlon, that now can be translated with sport), to which the same Ludovico Foscari adds, as motto, ludis iungit.
The whole expression is Panathlon ludis iungit, Panathlon unites through games (or with the sport) the meaning and purpose of the club: with that expression its contained also the ethic moral and cultural meaning of the club.
The motto must be read with the word Panathon. The subject of iungit is Panathlon.
The word ludus belongs to the second declination:
....................singular.............plural
nominativo.......ludus..................ludi
genitivo...........ludi....................ludorum
dativo.............ludo...................ludis
accusativo........ludum.................ludos
vocativo..........lude...................ludi
ablativo...........ludo...................ludis
So ludis is a complement of means (plural ablative) and the translation is:
Panatlon unites with means (or through, or with) or games. Conviviality is a strong element. The influence of the rotaryan model is highlighted by the denomination of "Rotary sportsmen ", that will be abandoned on proposal of Domenico Chiesa in 1955, to stress the difference with that club service in the name of the ideology of De Coubertin.
First president of the Club of Venice is Mario Viali.
